How to Support A Loved One In Rehab

Those who love someone addicted to drugs or alcohol invest large amounts of time and energy into persuading the addicted person to get help so much so that they often feel at a loss on how to keep helping and supporting the recovery process when their loved one finally does enter rehab. Here is some guidance on how you can support the rehabilitation process once it has begun.

Provide a Safe Home

If your loved one is participating in outpatient therapy, they will need a place to stay that is safe and free of temptations. They will need the same when they leave an inpatient facility. If you can, opening your home is a terrific way to help support your loved on in their recovery, but only after the rehabilitation process has begun. Doing so while they are using only enables negative behavior. Be aware that you may need to make a few lifestyle changes of your own in order to accommodate the recovery process.

Therapy and Visits

It is important that friends and family members learn when visiting hours are and visit those in inpatient rehabilitation when they are able so that the person seeking treatment has evidence of their love and support. It is also important to make yourself available for family counseling sessions when asked. If you can't visit personally, write encouraging and supportive letters often. If you would like to help your loved one but are struggling to know how, speak to the staff and counselors at the rehab facility.
