When Has Your Partying Gone Too Far?

It’s a saddening fact that 1 out of 12 people are afflicted with the disease of addiction. This means that they’ve lost the ability to control their drinking or recreational drug use. The part of the brain that’s largely responsible for self-awareness is drastically affected, so the addicted individual often doesn’t know that they have a problem.

What is a Hard User?

There are people who drink or use every day, but they wouldn’t be considered an addict. There are also people that drink to black out or may get a DUI while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They are often tagged as “hard drinkers,” and they still have control over their situation. When a hard user is faced with certain consequences, they can stop using. If they’re threatened with the loss of a job or their spouse leaving them, they can stop drinking to regain control of their lives.

What is an Addict?

An addict doesn’t have the same luxuries as a hard user. Although they may be able to stop drinking or using for days or weeks, they are still obsessing about getting drunk or high. When an addict is faced with the same potential consequences as a hard user, they’ll continue to use. This can even happen when they’re beginning to have medical issues as a result of their using. They suffer from a mental obsession and physical craving that can only be overcome with alcohol or drug rehabilitation treatment.
