Rehab: Learning to Have Fun in Sobriety

Many addicts turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to have fun. It’s common for those who suffer from addiction to be unsure of who they are and have social anxiety to a certain extent. They rationalize their drinking and using because they believe it’s the only way that they can enjoy themselves when they’re at social gatherings. Eventually, their substance of choice stops working. They’re no longer having fun, but they’re still chasing the same idea.

Reservations About Sobriety

For a number of alcohol abusers, the idea of getting sober can be very scary. They wonder how they’re going to socialize with their friends who enjoy going out to the bar or having parties. They worry about going out on dates and not being able to drink. They believe that there’s no way that they could possibly enjoy life if they get sober, but this is a delusion of the disease of addiction. Addiction is an illness that doesn’t want the person to get better, so it’ll do whatever it can to keep the person in the same cycle.

Retraining the Brain

When a person gets sober, it’s important that they begin to try new things and see what they enjoy. Addiction strips people away from their passions, and they often forget who they are and what they enjoy. Many rehab centers have additional activities and outings, so recovering clients or patients will begin to see that it is possible to have fun while they’re sober. Eventually, their body and mind will begin to heal, and will start to get a natural high from simply enjoying life.
