Medications are produced to cure
illnesses in prescribed dosages, but beyond that will cause adverse
consequences both on the user and his environment. Drug addiction is often the
cause of irrational behavior, violent crimes, and social hostility, among
others. Despite these known effects, exact symptoms for this disorder have yet
to be discovered.
An individual’s abuse for drugs
mostly begins with experimental usage for recreation, common behavior in young
adults for independence and defiance. After getting used to the drug, the user will
seek for more sources for additional consumption, no longer concerning himself with
important social needs like school or work, or loved ones. Acquiring and
consuming harder narcotics will eventually force the human brain to become
dependent with severe legal, social, and even financial problems for developed
uncontrollable behavior.
It is unfortunate that most cases
of drug dependence are untreated with only 10.4% of 23.4 million victims having
received treatments in 2007, according to the data of the Substance Abuse and
Mental Health Services Administration. Behavioral therapies and medical
treatments are often combined to detoxify the user of the substances for
effective recovery.
Among the types of therapeutic treatment, in-house treatment
is mostly preferred for those with a long history of drug addiction that
resulted in serious criminal activities and damaged social function. This
treatment option involves a therapeutic community for months depending on the severity
of the patient.
