Support for Families

This article is about the need for families of addicts and alcoholics to seek out support for themselves, as well as for their loved ones.

When you have an addict or alcoholic in the family, it is very important for that family member to receive support, help, and treatment. It is also important; however, for non-addict family members to take care of their own mental health and well-being. Many times, people forget to seek out the support they need for themselves when they see a loved one suffering.

It is normal to have feelings of guilt, anger, sadness, and helplessness, but often people feel that they are alone or that their feelings are inappropriate. Family members may have trouble communicating their struggles to others outside the family, feeling misunderstood or different from other families.

Some ways to get support and to feel less alone include individual counseling, supports groups, and family counseling and education. Individual counseling can help people sort out their emotions with a professional. There are also many support group available for families, such as Al-Anon, Nar-Anon, and more. These groups can help families see how other people are going through similar experiences. Some recovery centers offer programs for families to talk to their addicted family members in a safe setting, to be able to express their feelings and learn more about what their loved one is going through.

Ranch Creek Recovery also offer Family Education. We also want families to understand what these victims of substance abuse are going through.
